The court finding that 19th-century land grants were "defective" effectively says the Crown has been issuing bad paperwork for 170 years. It took 513 days of litigation to confirm what the colonial records from 1853 already showed. Ottawa often hides these risks in the fine print of the Public Accounts, but this ruling forces them to finally put a real price tag on that inaction.
