On World Wildlife Day, we recognize the importance of protecting species that keep ecosystems in balance.

But newly released government documents expose the grim reality of B.C.'s ongoing wolf cull—threatening one of nature’s most vital predators.

Since 2015, over 2,000 wolves have been killed under this controversial program, costing taxpayers more than $11 million—all **while the government admits that habitat destruction is the real cause of caribou decline.**

Recent Freedom Of Information (FOI) request documents reveal disturbing details about the so-called “Judas Wolf” program.

Every winter, helicopters are used to gun the wolves down from the air or land to net and collar individuals. The wolves are then tracked back to their pack, leading to the slaughter of entire families. The aim of the wolf cull is to reduce wolf populations by 80 per cent, so that there are fewer than three wolves for every 1000 square kilometres of territory.

In an interview with Pacific Wild, Dale Bakken, a retired constable for the The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), explains that shooting wolves from helicopters is inherently inhumane, with little chance of a quick, clean kill. With four years of helicopter-based research experience and 16 years investigating animal cruelty for the SPCA, Dale argues that the B.C. government has no real interest in ensuring a humane kill.

“I feel the government’s only priority is to eradicate as many wolves as quickly as they can. Humaneness is not a factor to them,” said Dale.

Pacific Wild asked Dale to review graphic images obtained through the FOI request documenting the wolf cull. His expert assessment confirms prolonged suffering and a disturbing disregard for animal welfare.

**34 Wolf Families Wiped Out In B.C.’s Cull**

FOI documents confirm that between January and March of 2024, 34 wolf families were systematically slaughtered under the province’s ongoing wolf cull—a program that continues to fail both science and wildlife.

This past Family Day, we honoured these 34 wolf families lost in just three short months with a simple yet powerful video on our social media.

Today, over 100 thousand people have viewed the video, with hundreds of followers asking how they can help end this brutal slaughter.

As B.C.’s wolf cull enters its 10th year, it can feel like our voices are being ignored. But together, we can create a chorus the government can't dismiss.

Pacific Wild has been fighting to end the wolf cull since day one, and we have some big, bold projects coming up, but we can’t do this alone. We need YOUR help.

How silly. At best, the anti-science halfwit MAGA-loving treasonous opposition hammerheads only hammered their own heads. What a pathetic spectacle of ignorance.
